See, my avatar, that was the system that got me addicted to gaming when i was a kid

I only owned 2 games:
"Sonic the hedgehog" and "Alex the kid in miracle world" and the latter only because it was embedded in the firmware
Sonic on the master system is the best game ever made

I regularly rented other games for the console but i remember most of them as crap and i can't even remember the names
I got a gameboy as well a little later and that one didn't hog up my parents tv

So what do you play on a Master System?

I've never owned a Master System, but I can recommend Phantasy Star (1) - I have that as part of the Phantasy Star Collection GBA cart. I also have Sonic the Hedgehog and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine as part of the GCN Sonic Mega Collection.

I haven't seen Golvelius. That looks pretty cool.

- Wonderboy 3: The Dragon's Trap: The PC-Engine version is better so I'd say play that instead given the choice, but the SMS one is almost as good.
- Dragon Crystal: Fun fairly simple but engaging rogue-like... there's a version on GameGear too that's close to the same, except strangely they replaced the soundtrack (IIRC the second main track used in the SMS version is really good, it's worth choosing it just for that)

Surprisingly, I'd add Ultima IV, since its best implementation was done on this platform (nicer gfx, easier dialogs...). Not a Japanese game, but really fun on Sega Master System!

Castle of Illusion and Land Of Illusion, both Mickey Mouse games, and The Lucky Dime Caper, a Donald Duck game.

These are three absolutely wonderful platformers, which if you like Alex Kidd and Sonic, are probably your sort of games.

+1 for Wonderboy 3, huge awesome adventure game.

Also I enjoy Astro Warrior, Robocod, Sonic Chaos.

Although the graphics are a bit poor Sonic1 on the SMS is probably better than Sonic1 on the MD, it's a very different game but is just *better* for some reason.

I didn't realize this was on SMS! Nice, I'll have to check it out.

Craigix: I agree on Sonic 1 SMS, although we're probably in the minority. And Wonder Boy 3 is the best game on the system, I reckon.

Tornado: I played Land of Illusion yesterday - superb! Very high quality platformer, almost wouldn't look out of place on a 16-bit system.

I know it was talked about already, but I have to say Phantasy Star was a must buy. In my 30+ years of gaming, it is one of the few games I can say is worth buying a console just to play it. I'm not sure if I would still feel that way today, but when I originally played it, I told all my friends to go out and buy a SMS and get it ASAP. It was epic at the time!

Honestly, I'd say skip the original Phantasy Star. Sure some of the later games are worth playing but it's much like the Legend of Zelda series. Sure the games where epic at the time, and many of them are considered some of the greatest games made, but try playing the original Legend of Zelda now, it's boring and tedious by todays standards, and honestly doesn't hold up. Even LoZ: A Link to The Past is beginning to show it's age, and seriously the Phantasy Star series are much the same in my opinion... it would take great patience to play the SMS game now without the goggles of nostalgia.

Sure the games where epic at the time, and many of them are considered some of the greatest games made, but try playing the original Legend of Zelda now, it's boring and tedious by todays standards, and honestly doesn't hold up. Even LoZ: A Link to The Past is beginning to show it's age, and seriously the Phantasy Star series are much the same in my opinion... it would take great patience to play the SMS game now without the goggles of nostalgia.

I think you're crazy. I played through Zelda 1 for the first time about 4.5 years ago, and again maybe half a year ago, and both times I've thoroughly enjoyed it. I don't know if I could get through PS1 now though.

I also think you're crazy - I'm not old enough to have owned a Master System the first time around; as I mentioned I have the PS games on a GBA cart. It's still a brilliant game.

Now I feel old, I owned a NES (with the grey gun and R.O.B… my parents gave the whole pack long ago, a few years after I got my SNES )

Zelda holds up for me (esp. LttP), but I played Miracle Warriors on the SMS the other day and I just cannot imagine playing that again for any length of times. Yikes.

I'm not very good at first person mazes for some reason, heh. I actually first played PS1 in 1997 when the ROM was first dumped, made it like halfway, and lost my save somehow. Strangely, I have no problem making it through PS2's ridiculous dungeons. PS1 is a groundbreaking game though. It stands quite above other RPGs of the era, IMO. Strangely, I really do have problems with 8-bit era RPGs unless I played them as a kid, which in fact only extends to SaGa on Gameboy. I can play SaGa 2 a thousand times over but FF1 is hard for me to get into.

My nav problems may just extends to 3D in general. I remember having a hard time finding the exit in a town in Dragon Quest 8 that was literally in a straight line from where I was.

Fun fact: PS1 on PS Collection on GBA is very blatantly being ran on an SMS emulator. The other two games are pretty clearly not, and are actually pretty well done for ports.
