I have been doing some reading and it looks like it is going to take more than just an app to make this work on an android device. Also some android phones may lack the hardware to connect and/or be locked out by software.

Most android devices with an expanded usb port can use the the d+/d- as tx and rx. It cannot just be turned on and off though. The kernel needs to be rebuilt with the headset some usband debugging through serial options disabled and the uart enabled. This doesn't sound like too big of a deal except you will loose all usb function of your device unless you re-flash your kernel. you will not be able to charge phones such as the nexus one while using serial.

Does anyone have any experience with the serial port on an android phone?

edit:as far as I can tell, we should be able to make this work with all htc android phones. For Motorola the only one that will work right now is the original droid. I do not know about the samsung or lg phones, I will look into it. also apparently people are having trouble making the serial port work on newer kernel releases.

edit2:sometimes reading things when you've been up all night makes you look stupid. The usb functionality does not need to be modified, rather the wired headset port needs to be disabled. You will not be able to connect a wired mic or speaker if the serial port is enabled. A much smaller issue in my opinion

here are a couple of pages I looked through in case anyone wants to check them out.

Never noticed anyone actually replied to this. I wrote this before we knew that the icontrolpad had bluetooth and was only connected to the iphone through the iphone connector. I was trying to get info on using the android phones in either usb host or serial mode. A function that some of them had and would be required to directly connect the icontrolpad to without bluetooth. Not really applicable now.
